Arapahoe Community College announces journalism degree program

excerpted from the ACC Insider, Nov. 2011

(Josie) Mills...delights when speaking about the Contemporary Journalism degree that she, with the help of Janna Oakes, developed from the ground up.

The journalism curriculum offers students the opportunity for the AAS, as well as an option to earn one of three certificates, including Writing and Reporting, Advertising and Marketing and Multimedia. Those pursuing the AAS are required to focus their emphasis on one of those three concentrations. Tom Demoulin, John Hall, Howard Fukaye, Janet Ludwig, Linda Mueller, Diana Hegeman, Murry Unell, Kathy Winograd, Leah Rogin-Roper and Neva Gronert also helped to shape this degree.

Students enrolling in the AAS in Contemporary Journalism will receive training in designing, writing, editing and producing print and online publications, and will combine traditional journalism skills in writing and editing with digital skills to become proficient in producing both hard-copy and electronic publications. One of the AAS courses, Internet Media (JOU 225), highlights digital media and Internet-based journalism as part of the curriculum. The topical outline of JOU 225 is comprised of ethics, best practices, journalistic style requirements and the effects of technology.

“I am proud of the work that Dr. Mills has put into the development of the new Contemporary Journalism program,” said (English Dept. Chair Jamey) Trotter.  “She met with numerous community leaders, journalism professionals and fellow journalism professors from schools across the state to build this curriculum.”
